I told him about the connection to my line in the book, and he also writes about the James/Younger's Gang. Once he knew that I was Jesse James 2 great grand-daughter and the book Smoke he asked me if he was always going to be writting about my family.LOL He is a joy to be with. He then asked me if I was also related to Ma Baker cause he has a book on her too.LOL

I am fascinated by what you have conveyed about that recent and continuing book. I hope that you can post something soon about the author's research that has been the basis for his books. I will definitely be interested in getting his book or books, because, according to rational belief, the more knowledge, the better it is to open one's mind, on any, or all, topics, that make or deliver an impact on the human condition and how one can try to understand and comprehend the past, and the present, based upon what we know of the past. I too, have just received a newly released DVD copy of the documentary entitled "Return to Shetek: The Courage of the Fool Soldiers", which was produced by Barbara Britian and is to document "Two powerful stories from the past [which] transform present day relations between the descendants of Native Americans and white settler families of 1862". I am looking forward to viewing this new documentary and hope to be able to provide a humble take on what is revealed in the film. I think that the more that we all learn and discover about the historical picture of our joint past, will undoubtedly help us to open our minds and eyes, to the real history of those important events that have left an undeniable trail of the remnants that shape the concept of history that we know, that we accept, and of that of history, which we know is questionable, unexplained, false, racist, fraudulent, true, deceiving, motivating, repulsive, rejuvinating, and/or true, or total BS. We need to expose ourselves to all knowledge and histories, including the governmental (supposedly, official) histories, and specifically those participles of history developed through the authors and the artists that may or may not have a real or true grip on sincerety or understanding of the times and of the people of those times. We, through our own eyes, hearts and souls, with the intellect to suspect the fraud from the truth, can come to our conclusions, and how it melds with what of history that each of us has dug out and exposed through our own efforts and expenditures through time. As I have said before, the history was initially written only with the point of view of the alleged conquerors.......they set the tone, they set the mood, they set the scene.......they, also set the mold for afterthought, many times based upon prejudice, hate, greed, destruction and annillation in mind. We should honestly serve our past and present heritage by searching and viewing these historical documentations with that in mind, and know that the real truth of what really happened or is happening now, is an elusive ghost of the facts, that we each need to corner in the great expanses of our individual minds and intellect, so that we can filter out the true, from the propaganda of the times, and reach for the facts that form the foundation of the untold truth. Our future and the lives of those that seek the truth, is dependant upon the willing and eager and observant eyes and minds of the truly caring, in order to oversee the transpiring of the historical environment of who we are and from whenst we all have come. I believe the documentary that I just received today, was intended to reveal more of the truth of what actually happened to so many of our joint anscenstors back in 1862, because I know some of the individuals involved in the project. I will report back, once I have the time to view it. In the meantime, please enjoy the opportunity to turn the pages back to rediscover and relearn the true history.......trust what you can, but be forever mindful, that a blind trust of everything that is told or reported, is not always as it seems, and it takes a curious and eager mind, to see beyond conclusions that were meant to seal our thoughts and our memories........For, our thoughts and our memories of events, should never be shielded from the real truth.....no matter the author or the speaker. Thank you for listening and participating. The journey continues.....but it is well worth the effort and the time.

Let Them Eat Grass Volume I: Smoke
Koblas details Indian history from the earliest times, carefully setting up the climate of inevitable confrontation with the arrival of white settlers in Minnesota.
He explores the treaties made between the United States government and the Indian nations and explains why and how these treaties failed
Let Them Eat Grass shows how both sides failed to understand the fundamental differences in culture, and how the pressure put upon the politicians in Washington D. C., to open lands for settlers enticed them to break treaties almost before the ink dried.
The stage is well set for the coming conflict, including the skirmishes that preceded the uprising that had to come.

Author Explains History Of Indian Relations With White Settlers Published Date: 11-26-2006 11:24 PM CT To mark the end of thanksgiving weekend, an author came to Mankato over the weekend to share stories of early day relations between native Americans and pilgrims. Author John Koblas explained how the history of Indian relations with white settlers goes even further back. Koblas's new book, let them eat grass, #1 smoke, is the first of three books he wrote detailing Indian history from the earliest times, and describing the tension which built up as white settlers arrived in Minnesota. He has authored other books as well. Robert's of the rails, about the Sontag brothers, who were Mankato's outlaws and Minnesota's contribution to the outlaw world and of course they grew up in Mankato. So, I'm really into Minnesota history. He partnered up for the event with singer lonesome Ron: King of the valley yodelers. That song was actually inspired by Koblas's new book.
